KIMMY SCHWIMMY Mission Statement
Kimmy Schwimmy Music was very carefully crafted over many years while in the classroom to help enhance what preschool aged children are already learning by using music as the enhancement tool. This original music is literally the canvas that we ‘play’ on, and by using this format, subjects such as shapes, colors, letters, body parts, spatial relationships, etc. are reinforced, but in a playful way since a childs play is their 'work'. The props that I bring in for the children to play with create an overall tactile, engaging experience(sensory integration) and are also used to reinforce gross and fine motor skills. The story songs were written to enhance imagination, language development, and increase attention span. Some sign language is also incorporated and there are many songs that help boost self esteem and create an over all ‘feeling’ of well being.
I am STILL figuring out better ways to teach and present this music as I continue to work in the educational environment daily which means I am always learning from the children. I work in 7 different preschools in Northern NJ and NYC. Every day is different and my goal and belief is that each child who sits down with me is unique and ‘new’ so I remain open to these little beings for any inspiration to shift how I can teach them or guide them or just play with them in a more effective way. Holding on to anything ‘old’ can limit expansion. Yes, there are tried and true things that work, but I have to remember that we are, as humans, constantly evolving and ever changing so the new and better and ‘more’ is really what we are all here for, especially these little ones!
I like to see what the crowd would call a ‘weakness’ and look at it from a whole other perspective and see the power and strength of it. I think it is fun to ignore common streams of thought and create a new one, a happier one, or one that just feels a little better. Why not? Children do it every minute of the day.
I hear over and over that children should be raised to respect adults, and I truly believe that they will grow to respect all people, young and old, if we first respect them. Respect their quiet time, their play time, their personal space, and even in how we communicate anything at all to them by remembering to only speak to them when we are settled inside ourselves emotionally so that we offer them the better part of us…not the run down part at the end of the day or the angry part in the heat of the moment.
I work on myself daily and moment by moment as I take seriously my role as a person who sits before the youngest of beings on the planet to sing and bring something that they can use to help them find their own power and trust their own guidance system. I see what I do as a ‘calling’ of sorts and I am grateful every day for the opportunities and the strength to continue.
Children wake up in the morning bright and resistance free as though they are being born all over again. I usually am with them in the morning hours and the energy is so powerful and feels so new, and so I am all about learning from them as much as I am about teaching them. It is like they are my little co-creators because almost every song I have written has been inspired by a child or by looking around in their classroom seeing what they were already learning and interested in. Now that I have the music, we co-create on other levels of communication and cooperation and learning how to be the best versions of ourselves in the moments we are together.
I am grateful for every school that brings me on board to teach and sing and share with their children for this is truly what I love to do…I am going into my 12th year and loving it more than when I first began.
Love Always,
Kimmy Schwimmy
